This year I want to stock the cabinets in my model apartment. I don't want them to look too polished or professional...I work in a college market.
Give me some suggestions please!! I want people to be wowed when they open up the cabinets.
Thanks for your help!!
Try thinking in terms of what people collect. For instance, my husband has a nice collection of
"hot sauces." Some people collect different brands of tea.
Try a new product, something advertised on TV that we've all been wanting to try, like one of those new sweetners.
Something like this could be a conversation starter and lead to the "connection" you want to get with your customer.
If you live up north, how about a bag of grits.
I bought a bottle of wine one year that had the same name as my property. Nobody noticed it, though.
We put colorful canned foods in the kitchen cupboards, and small colorful towels or sample size toiletries in the bath cupboards. If a prospect mentioned they liked an item, I would give it to them.
One thing that turned out to be regularly noticed is brands of foods from nearby restaurants. A can of Taco Bell refried beans, a shaker of seasoning from Red Robin, a jar of jam from Shari's, etc. These kinds of items were good conversation starters because residents would either mention that they liked this restaurant, or they would ask where it was. The more I can communicate with a prospect, the more I can endear them to us.

I think if I were decorating in a college market, I might stock the pantry cabinets with all kinds of microwaveable items. I might also display items in a basket similar to a Care Package Mom might send for Finals Week. This might include an iPod, energy drinks, caffeine drinks, chips, protein bars. If the apartment offers in suite laundry, I'd hang a "clothesline" with Missing Socks pinned there with a funny sign. I would also put hooks in the bathrooms because a lot of college students don't use matching beautiful towels. Of course, putting together together a shower caddy would be appropriate. Balloons filling the bathtub would be fun, too, and fuzzy slippers and a robe displayed would also work. And finally, college themed rugs, t-shirts hanging in the closet might be appealing, too.
I love the ideas! Wine bottle is great! I am now managing a property downtown and there are a lot of very active residents who bike/walk everywhere. I am thinking of filling cabinets with all natural granola bars and snacks. Makes me more motivated to be more active myself, ha!
I think the idea of "college themed food and drinks" makes a lot of sense. It would be funny/cute to fill all the cabinets with only energy drinks or Gatorade.
I once labeled each cabinet with its own small frame hanging from a ribbon. The lowest shelf of upper cabinets had fun "college food" stocked in them and the next shelf up had the frame hanging from it, just low enough to read. The frames had messages in them about local deals just for college students, fun "messages from mom" about eating/cleaning habits and so on. The team had a great time thinking them up and the prospects got a laugh out of them. Upon move in we provided all of the tips and notes in one document along with their welcome gift.
