When you have an employee promoted into a new role, do you move them into the role immediately, do they have some sort of onboarding?

When you have an employee promoted into a new role, do you move them into the role immediately, do they have some sort of onboarding into that role, or another path to make that transition go smoothly?

Usually with our company, they have already been training up for the position they are moving to. That way when a position comes open they are ready to promote. Once promoted, they start on the training checklist for that position just to check off all the boxes again and make sure they are going to be successful.

Lesley Wilson That is similar to how we work with those moving into new roles - especially when they are promotions. We work with them through those responsibilities to make them comfortable with them. But, some parts of a role, especially when moving into a supervisor or managerial role are a little more challenging once they are in it. There seems to be a lack of confidence once they've moved into the role. That's where I feel we may have a disconnect or a better transition opportunity to apply.

Amanda Lynn Gunn agree! I think a buddy system works good as well by partnering then with someone else in that position.

If theyre getting promoted, i would assume its cause they are ready for a promotion. The rest of the preparedness comes while performing fully in the position. I would hope promoting before they're ready would not occur, you could be unintentionally setting them up for failure!!

Eric Rivera It's not necessarily that they are not prepared, but it's the confidence to put what's learned to use. And it's more of the managerial skills - the people management, the coaching and mentoring, the difficult conversations. Training on them is one thing, but being faced with them in that position is another.
