One of my tenant's came in teary-eyed. Told me that she no longer has a cat, and then left. As she was climbing her steps I asked if she wanted a hug. It was a sad yet tender moment. I told her that my kitty passed away in 2014 and it was incredibly painful. We all have trials and tribulations in property management, but it is nice when we can have a compassionate moment with a tenant. I like being a people-person!

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago, a resident of mine’s cat had been having health issues that started when she moved in only a few weeks prior. I asked her how her cat had been doing, she took the cat to a clinic for a few days to be evaluated, but the cat ended up passing. I cried unexpectedly, as I have 6 cats (don’t judge me lol) so I’m very emotional towards cats. She appreciated my reaction and we ended up having a cry and hug together

This is one reason why I don’t believe in pet rent ../ They are family members to many . I would you feel to put kid rent on the lease ?

I agree with you. We do charge a pet deposit, but it's not much.

I had some rainbow bracelets 1 for a and a as a sympathy item to go out. Most time we would find out when they would call to take off the pet rent. Pop in a little bag with a hand written card.

When my cat, which was my very first pet (of my own) died, I was a blubbering mess. It is always so easy to see other's pets as just an animal, but for that person, it truly is family. Good on you for recognizing she needed some support!
