I'm curious. How many of you out there have found that every emotional support animal just happens to be a German shepherd, a pit bull, a rottweiler, a mastiff, a doberman, or some other aggressive or restricted breed? They never seem to be yorkies or poodles.

Rochelle Kirk Yes sir! Had a couple pit bulls, a Rottweiler, and some pit mixes this year. Found other reasons to deny them

Rochelle Kirk Robert Hoop same here. Couldn’t find a reason to deny on that one- job and income great and verified, great credit, great residential verification. About 6 months into her lease she just disappears- turns out she was really into identity fraud and I’m 100% certain that’s how she got into one of my places. That said, those dog tore the backyard, master bedroom and floors up badly. That was a $17,000 make ready

Guest Insider Well when are we going to address the real problem at hand which is “aggressive breed restrictions” so that people don’t have to go through the headache of making their dog an ESA

Guest Insider The restricted breeds are the best breeds imo! I'll take a pittie over a yapper and peeing machine any day.

Guest Insider Have you seen some of these Yorkie’s? Hella aggressive!

Guest Insider Actually we see chihuahuas & other obnoxious small breeds most often.

Guest Insider The "aggressive breeds" are the best support animal. Big, cuddle bugs that protect the family/owner. We all know that Pitbulls were know as Nanny dogs! When are we going to address the outdated branding? What is a yapping 5 pound killer chihuahua gone help with? Other than breaking someone's last nerve with all that barking!

Guest Insider I have a few friends with small dogs that are way more aggressive then most of the dogs listed in the aggressive breed list. I have a smaller female German shepherd and anytime we go to the dog park she freaks out and runs from all small dogs

Nichole Lipka Yup my 10 lb mini dachshund is aggressive towards strangers and is destructive, but my 80lb Great Pyrenees loves everyone and she causes no damages. She’s perfect.

Guest Insider Yessss! I have a Doberman, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve though what a great support animal he’d make.

Guest Insider Little dogs are a-holes but pit bulls have their reputation for a reason. They are friendly but agitate easily and snap quicker. My friends pitbull was in my home, got excited and was running to me, my dog followed excited. Her dog turned to snap at my dog and ended up biting me. Another time my ex was on a walk in our neighborhood and a neighbors pitbull just out of nowhere latched onto his thigh.

Guest Insider No dog is perfect. There will always be "stories" to be told. Bottom line... Owners are responsible for the training and actions of their pets. Bad owner = Bad dog!

Guest Insider I am in rescue and it saddens me that people can not bring their pets. I get it to an extent but - we can find a better way. I’ve been bitten by a resident’s chihuahua but they’ll never be on a restricted list. We should be able to meet the pet and make a call, IMO.

Guest Insider I've seen doggy bites with the no aggressor breeds more than those deemed aggressive.

Guest Insider Actually we have been seeing more cats recently! But yes, pit bulls or "lab mix"es are the number 1 ESA dog we see.

Guest Insider We (the industry) have done this to ourselves. We got greedy with fees - now everything is “exempt” - we restricted size/breed & they are all ESA.Also - unfairly - Look at the statistics - cocker spaniels bite more than pits. Etc etc - it’s media & how an animal is raised that determines temperament! Lastly - my opinion. Kids cause a lot of damage, no additional rent. Cats don’t use poop bags - same pet rent as a dog. Either way we collect for damages at move out - being fee happy has pushed us into this position & before you know it we won’t have anything left to charge for…

Guest Insider If owners would stop restricting them we would be able to make money and wouldn't have people using ESA. I worked at a property in Reno and since he allowed all dogs. We rarely ever had an ESA.

Guest Insider I realize the small dogs may bite more often (and they can be incredibly annoying), but you don't hear their bite killing people regularly like you do with pits. That's the problem and why people don't want them. Of course there are good pit bulls out there, but there are plenty of them that aren't as well. Not a risk I'm willing to take if I don't have to.

Amanda Truax If you had ever worked with training dogs, you’d know the answer to that question. German shepherds, Dobermans, and Pit Bulls are all very intelligent work dogs. Some of those smaller breeds… dust mops with attitudes

Guest Insider I have a cane corso as an esa. Other than playing In the dirt, which most dogs do, he’s not destructive. Can he be intimidating? Absolutely, which is why he’s my esa. I don’t lay awake at night crippling with anxiety about whether or not someone is going to break in, because he would never let anything happen to me. That is the joy of the breed, 100+ pounds of loving snuggle bug who would do anything to protect his family.

Guest Insider We aren’t breed restricted, so it’s less ESA for us and people pay the 250 deposit, 250 pet fee and $30 pet rent with no problem.

Laura Jordan We have no breed restrictions at our property, and have not yet had any issues in the 4 years I have been at this property, but yes the chihuahuas have been more aggressive than all the pits combined we have on property!!

Jennifer Moran Our company does not have any breed restrictions. The other commentors are right, any dog can be aggressive. I have a black lab that is extremely aggressive towards other dogs. I think these restrictions are completely outdated.

Janice Quill The aggressive breed list in most cases has come down through the insurance companies. They are chosen by the insurance companies based on the the pound/pressure of the bite capability if a dog bites. Unfortunately It comes down to liability and lawsuits.

Karen Kossow Janice Marcum Quill many insurance companies don't put any restrictions on this anymore. We did away with breed restrictions in April of this year and when we checked with our insurance company before doing so, they had no problem with it.

Guest Insider petscreening.com has put an end on a lot of the fake ESA’s for us. As for the dog, it has more to do with the owner and how they treat and train the animal. Just evicted someone last month who was just letting the dog go in the apartment instead of taking it outside.

Steve Jenkins I agree that one probably ought to look at the owner. I tend to look at the attitude of the dog being rather similar to the attitude of the owner. With that said, I wonder how many owners are willing to actually put their dogs through training.

Teresa Cantu Lots of the aggression of dogs tends to come when they arent fixed. I wish we could remove breed restrictions and enforce that the pet is instead fixed. That would fix the EXTREME overpopulation issue, as well as put the property in a better position to collect the pet premiums since people won’t feel the need to work the system just to have a home for them and their “cursed” dog.
