I just bought a new Ipad 4. I've had it for 2 weeks and still have no idea how to use in for business.

I can check e-mail and access my office computer from home, but I can do all of that on my laptop.

If you have one, what apps are you using that are helping you at the office?

I'm thinking of selling it!!!

Sandy,

I don't have an IPAD4 or even an IPAD1 (or2). Me, a guy who vehemently rebelled against the desk top computer in 1990 (I was wrong of course). I will, however share what I think people do with an IPAD (or whatever brand) do:

1. I think it is most meaningful if you can say you stood in line for 4 days, in the freezing cold, at Best Buy, to have bought it.

2. It is also more meaningful if yours is the latest and greatest with the latest "apps" and the most or largest memory. Maybe something well north of 64 (bites or gigs or).

3. I think you lay it out on your desk, as you want co workers or especially superiors to see it. They may comment or since they have no clue what you would use it for either, they would "not" notice it there. Unless, of course they have one of their own, a different story. Then they would ask about it, again how many "apps", which and what kind of "apps", or so to speak is YOURS better than MINE? Or newer, or something other than black? And do you have a case(es) for it? Or screen protectors?

4. For women, there is the age old problem of it making your purse too heavy. For men, if it is bigger than say 3X7 inches, forget about wearing it on the belt, although that would be a good way for other people to "see" it. If your a man, and a contractor of some kind, I can relate a story about a plumber who had one, dug a water line, and discovered later he had covered up the IPAD in the ditch!!
That sucker just slid off the backhoe on him!!! So, get insurance on it maybe?

5. I would avoid getting into "how much did you pay for it"? That sometimes cuts ties with friends and you might have to lie either up or down. Just say you "picked it up the other day". Let it go at that.

6. If nothing else list on it some phone numbers. I don't know if it calls people or not, but it would have an "app" for phone numbers anyway. So, when your not doing much, open that "app" and update the numbers or just stare at them. Especially when "others" are in the office. "Wow, Sandy has it ALLLL together on that new IPAD"!!!!

7. Know where the wireless "hotspots" are. Sometimes a thing like you have can find them and tell YOU about them. My smartphone does automatically. So, what does that actually mean? Wally World and some coffee shops and my RV park are all "hotspots". Great.

8. You can check your email I think. You need to know about POP3 and SMTP and I don't know what these acro's stand for but you will have to know to check email in a cheap small town ISP like I use.
Can you actually believe "SMTP" means "Send Mail To People"? How novel!!! WHO KNEW?

Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps. In the end, or as the British say "At the End of the Day", I actually don't have the foggiest clue what you can use your IPAD for. But this was fun to write.
Cheers

I love you, Herb!

I did get a deal on it on Cyber Monday on Ebay!!! I only have 3 people have seen it. 1. My girlfriend; 2. My maintenance tech; 3. My maintenance tech's friend. They all asked me how much I paid for it!

I work alone in the office, so I don't get to show it off. Don't really want anyone to know I have it because I don't want it stolen.

I talked to my boss, who I knew had one, and he could only tell me one thing I could use it for at work.

Since know one else has replied, they must know what I have figured out...

IT'S A $400 TOY!!!!!!!

I have a TV to watch movies on, a radio to listen to music on and a smart phone that can do everything the Ipad can do.

I asked my husband if he would mind if I sold it and bought a nice laptop.

Sandy, you can link your property management software onto your iPad (Yardi can do it anyway); you can also blog from it; you can also set it up as a leasing tool (as I have) so that when you don't have any vacant apartments to show, people can "tour" via the iPad. You can also use it as a leasing "kiosk" of sorts and people can apply on line on it. It actually is a great addition to leasing.
(I liked Herb's answer so much I tweeted a link to it on my twitter account. What a funny answer!!!!)

Sandy,
The iPad, tablets for that matter, are interesting devices because it's something you never knew you needed until you need them! I had the same experience as you Sandy, and the only thing I used my iPad was for the emails and surfing the web! But the more I started to use it, the more I got hooked.

The key things to remember is that tablet devices are portable, connected to the internet and visually amazing.
Your iPad can be seen as an entertainment device or productivity tool. Let me share some ideas on the entertainment side first:
1) Download movies and music and play it during travel time
2) Download books or magazines to read
3) Download games as a substitute for a baby sitter!

How bout for your day to day work life?
1) Email is the number one thing. You can perform work from anywhere
2) Showing apartments. Use the iPad as a way to present to your potential tenants on the fly
3) Note taking. As you walk around, you might need to jot notes about the apartments
4) Using it with existing software provider who may offer a mobile component
5) We've developed an app called Happy Inspector on the iPad to perform inspections. All types of inspections from Move In/Out, periodic, maintenance etc.

Hope this list helps?

ILoveLeasing.com has a great program that collects all leads, phone calls if you like, and creates amazing brocures for response to prospects, schedules appointments, etc...AND it has an iPad/Tablet program that lets you take it with you wherever you go, plus adds a bunch of on-the-spot leasing goodies. Check it out at www.iloveleasing.com .

I have one connected to a TV in the office. We can play Pandora stations, show our YouTube videos, let residents/prospects use it to become our fan on facebook or follow us on twitter, etc...
It's pretty cool to be able to carry it on a tour and take photos or video that you can use in follow up. Or you could facetime with a prospect!
There are cool apps you can download that are specific to our industry. There's one that you can take a photo of a vacant apartment and then let the prospect play with a virtual furniture arranger.

My husband would say "as a door stop" As a PC tech, he hates all things Mac.

But if I was allowed to have one, I'd use it for everything! Watch movies, make movies, surf the internet, listen to music, sync my ipod, as a picture frame, FACEBOOK! reading e-books, listening to audiobooks, shopping, selling on ebay, reserving library books...Wow! I could go on forever!

I have a resident who carries one everywhere and it always on it so she can verify whatever someone is saying as they say it...it's a little annoying!

I would agree with your husband, I do not like Apple very much, but since they DO have a major facility in my neighborhood that provides US jobs and contributes to our local economy, I do have an Ipod (this facility provides all the support for Ipods, Ipads and Iphones). This is the only Apple product I own (or intend to). For all I care, a heavy person can make their own IPad by SITTING on an Iphone.

Hi Sandy,

First let me say how blessed you are to have an iPad 4, as many people still haven’t had the opportunity to even get an iPad original or tablets. I personally purchased an iPad 2 for my wife a year ago, and let me tell you that she loves it. I personally not too big of a fan of Apple, and but I really like the way we can integrate the iPads to our day-t0-day business. Not only is an iPad much easier to travel with than a laptop, it also combines all other technology in one product (i.e. Video Camera, Picture Camera, Email, Calculator, Recorder, etc).

Imagine a unit/property inspection with an iPad? No need to have a writing pad, camera, pencil or anything else. You can take notes on your iPad, take pictures or video, record voice notes and easily attach it to an email or your property management software directly from where you are at.

No what about if your community takes online payments for rent? You know how cool it would be to go knocking on doors to past-due tenants, and simply bring up the tenant portal on your iPad so they can make their payment via-ACH or credit card? No more excuses!

These are a just a few minor things you can get accomplished with an iPad or even a tablet.
