New Multifamily Insiders member here about to take the plunge for the IREM Certified Property Manager designation. Wondering what impact this credential might have on my career.... An impact worth the price tag of obtaining it I hope Welcoming all comments and feedback.
All designations are worth it in the multifamily industry. It demonstrates one's commitment to the field, to learning, and to presenting yourself confidently.
In my opinion, the designation puts the multi-family professional at a higher level. It also levels the playing field if one does not a college education.
Nothing is more valuable than a successful track record in the industry!
With that said, if you are new to the industry or just starting out, the CPM designation is great to have and will give you a superior edge. It will show your commitment to continued education and the industry theory, however, I can tell within 15min if someone is in tune with our industry or full of hot air. I have spoken to many with the CPM designation that are not in tune and just like to show/talk about certifications and the such.
Spend your resources on an MBA if you can, there you have real value for your time and money. An MBA, paired with real world experience is a great path to big picture success in the multifamily housing industry!
I definitely agree that a CPM is worth your time and money and will raise you a CCIM as well.
I myself plan to start my candidacy for CCIM and complete the CPM. There's a saying that goes, "You're only one book away from changing your life" or in this case designation or even conversation or meeting. The intrinsic value gained from constant and continual personal study will always pay dividends.
