I was curious if anyone is using the Kwikset Smartkey Deadbolts on resident's doors and what you think about them. I love the idea of them but all the reviews I'm finding are very negative. We currently have master keys but hate the liability of them and wanted to switch to something different. If you are using them, what is your success/failure rate with them?

I have always used Kwikset locks and rekeyed them with a Kwikset rekeying kit.

At the advice of a new maintenance tech, I bought a few of the Smartkey deadbolts. One malfunctioned and we had to call a locksmith and paid $150 to get it open because it was a deadbolt.

I use passage knobs on the bottom door handle.

I will not buy anymore. Techs need to learn how to rekey.

Thank you Sandy. It sounds like there are still some kinks they need to work out of them.

I have also had issues with residents being able to re-key their own locks using a bobby pin instead of the smartkey tool
