At my property, we are interviewing for maintenance staff. What questions do you ask, and what do you watch out for? How many references do you ask for?
We just finalized a recent hire in our maintenance department. I always ask simple questions such as:
1. If you never had to do one job ever again what would it be?
2. If you could pick any one job to do over anything else what would it be?
3. A resident complains she has no water pressure in her kitchen? How would you trouble shoot this?
4. A resident complains he has no power in just one room of his apartment. How would you trouble shoot this?
5. What is the best quality that you found one of your past or current employer to possess?
6. What is the worst quality that you found one of your past or current employers to posssess?
1, 2, 5, 6 will speak volumes about the character of the person you are interviewing. Number 6 will give you a big inside on if you have someone that takes responsibility or choses to point the finger. There is nothing worse than trying to work with a maintenance person who blames everyone around them for poor quality of work instead of themselves for not doing the job right in the first place.
