It's been a REALLY tough couple of years for our industry in many parts of the country! Wages were frozen, benefits reduced, staff cut, budgets slashed! And even the most antsy employees endured, staying in place, fearful of being able to get another position.
So was there any backlash? Was morale impacted? Did we hear of "bad behavior" in the trenches as a reaction to the tough times? (You're not a bad person...that was just BAD BEHAVIOR...VERY bad!)

Here's one person's CRAZY reaction:
A maintenance supervisor we'll just call "Water Boy" asked for a pay increase last year when many companies (including his) had frozen wages. He had just taken (and passed) CAM-T (at his company's expense) and felt it merited a raise. They gave him an additional $1 per hour/5.5% increase, and he quit because he wanted $2, even though he had no job, he would have to reimburse part of his CAM-T cost, he gave up free health insurance, and would have to move (lived on-site at a 20% discount). On the way out, he sabotaged the pool pump and opened a valve in a vacant, causing a flood...Hence the nickname. You want the rest of the story? He didn't find another job and tried to get hired back...
In the best interest of the company, my management company let go of a leasing agent who was not only not performing, but also looking for employment elsewhere while on the job! The company decided to let this agent go obviously and when they did, this agent screamed all sorts of curse words and called people names on the way out. The strangest part of the whole process of letting this agent go was that this agent thought we should have called first to let them know that they would be fired when they arrived at work that day!
Don't you think that's RIDICULOUS!
And don't you love when you're paying people to do their job searches? We have people apply for positions using their work emails, fax forms and fax machines...REALLY? So the latest one was a friend of mine called a Maintenance Supervisor candidate and realized the cell phone he called was the candidate's current Property After-Hours Emergency phone...
It was such a tough year, and one property I know of, the Manager was trying to save money and used the back of property reports to print resident late letters and renewals!
