Hi everyone - looking to develop some additional sessions on fair housing during 2010 - who are "your" fair housing mentors, gurus, etc. Looking for some great people to talk about situations who are not attorneys (not that attorneys are bad!) - but who have extensive fair housing knowledge from a practical industry standpoint. Thanks so much!
Steve, I have a great relationship with the director of the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit and consult with him often. Most major cities have that type of organization. In addition, the HUD office in Detroit is always very helpful whenever I have a question or need clarification. I always rely on these two resources.
I teach and train quite a bit on fair housing in Seattle, but for the best fair housing information, you'll want to reach out to Doug Chasick, the apartment doctor, or Nadine Green, head legal council for For Rent. Those are the best two minds in our industry, and both are entrancing to listen to in a training session!
I understand the legal aspects of Fair Housing; and can understand needing to train all NEW employees and do a 'recertification' annaully (I would administer a test when performance reviews need to be done).
All I can say is that Fair Housing can be boiled down to lessons from grade school. Remember the Golden Rule?
I recently completed the CAM course (and passed the exam, :cheer: ) provided by the Chicagoland Apartment Association. The module on fair housing was presented by Cynthiann King.
I thought I was fairly well versed but there were definitely a few eye openers. Great lady, good speaker, definite guru. Lots of local and national contacts. I believe you can contact her at [email protected]. If that does not work out, the CAA can probably help you there.
