I read the other day that the Department of Justice is requesting/advising courts to have landlords/property owners apply for rental assistance on behalf of the resident prior to taking any eviction cases (once they start allowing eviction cases for non-payment again).
Personally, I have helped many residents through the application process. If they didn't have computer access, I would let them come in and use my computer. If they didn't have all the paperwork, I got it for them. If they had questions, I'd reach out to the agency. But to require that the office staff actually do all the footwork, that's crazy right?! Plus, can I legally apply for assistance for someone else?!
I know here in Indiana, the state run rental assistance program is so far behind on their paperwork that even if I did apply on a residents behalf, I still would not see that money for another 4-6 months.... Isn't that just another way of keeping these non-payment cases out of the courts for longer?
