We're partnering with Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando on an article with tips for pet owners living in apartments. I thought I'd ask the experts, what is your best tip for renters with dogs/cats?
For dog owners especially: USE FLEA PROTECTION TREATMENTS. Renters tend to forget how many different animals you are sharing a space with, particularly if you are using the dog park & walking trail. It’s SO much better to prevent than treat after the fact!
If they don’t plan on picking up after it, it’s best not to adopt/own one. Dogs are like babies, in that they are unable to care for themselves and thus the owner/pet parent needs to understand the health risks involved by allowing the materials to decompose rather than dispose.
Don't leave your windows open on a windy day and forget to out your door stop on, with a dog who has anxiety. I learned this the hard way and now have to replace my carpet in my bedroom and living room

Dogs love routine, a bored dog gets in trouble. Dogs take time to decompress from the shelter environment so don’t expect to see their true personality for a few weeks. Always microchip your pet!

Pick a chill dog- Size does not always determine how content a pet will be in an apartment, you want a couch potato, or a dog who likes bursts of exercise and then to chill:

Have them professionally trained for apt living. All the noises often cause barking, other dogs passing by causes barking - they need to learn when it’s okay to bark like at the Bark Park!
