Not sure if this has been asked in here but given recent events here in Pittsburgh - Does everyone's community have an ACTIVE SHOOTER protocol? IS it ONLY for staff or do you have something in place for residents as well?

All we have is a notification to send out to stay indoors until clear. Might be a resident event to have a professional come and speak?

I have been in contact with my local Police Dept and have been emailing back and forth with an officer to coordinate on-site training for my team (I have a staff of 17). Definitely reach out to your local PD. Remember, the better we are at handling and reacting to those types of situations, the more we assist them in doing their jobs, too. The main goal for everyone is that we all get to go home!

Sarah, I like this recommendation. Will definitely look to implement this. We already work with our VFD and municipality so this makes sense.

I always had my own in case of an emergency binder and I made safety procedures and different protocols for each and every disaster that could happen. I always asked each company I worked with if they had an emergency protocol binder or emergency procedures on the intranet. The only one that had this already set up was AIMCO. Very helpful when managing a community. That's why I made my own.

NAA had a session on this at Apartmentalize this past summer. Emailing all residents and utilizing a texting program to shelter in place unless a police officer comes to tell you it’s safe to move to another location is pretty much what you can tell residents. For staff, train your staff on errant behaviors Residents May demonstrate prior. Your Maintenance Team should be on alert for reporting Residents who may have more than a few firearms, who may be on drugs and who are aggressive. Having good relationships with Residents who may know things other Residents may be posting on social media can also help. You should also include this in an Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Handbook.

Well, Luckily since we already "Shelter in Place" as a part of our Emergency/Fire Alarm (We are a 9 story high-rise) Our residents are familiar with that terminology. We've done our annual emergency preparedness for staff and even a separate for active shooter drill. And of course - Resident Relations goes a long wayyyyyyyy. Thanks for confirming we are on the right track!

Can I ask what resources you used to put your own together. We are being tasked to put something similar together and haven't received any direct where to even begin. It's a great idea!
