A question that I know I often ask myself but well, being myself I have only answers I can research...
How did you / are you climbing up the ladder to being more than a Manager? What are the steps you took to get to be more than a Manager (like : Property to Regional )
Do you like managing small complexes or large?
Trying to figure out how to advance in my new year while looking for a possible new position.
I though I would ask all of you .. You wonderful people with great experience and knowledge.. on a personal level and not an article that seems so dry...
Get your CAM and CAPS if you don’t have them. In addition to be valuable learning the networking has a lot of value. Think about why you want to be promoted. I loved being a manager, but didn’t especially like being a regional. Training has become my niche, and I wouldn’t change a thing! So be open to variations on the path!
I like being a manager.. not sure Regional or above is my thing.. my big thing is that I love putting people in homes... I enjoy keep it up.. I like being a manager but would enjoy also being a manager with a office helper as I like to be more hands on and not stuck 24/7 to my computer .. I like being a people person, showing the units etc..
Who / Where would I look to for getting my CAM/CAPS as I am on my own doing it and no clue where to start on that..
Grow your own value and the value you bring to others. Lift your team up to more and bigger things. Become the expert in important parts of the job and be a resource for sister communities. I have a dual site (total 250 units) that, according to upper management, had never been successfully led. It has been my experience that the more people you serve, the more you deserve.
Yep! It gives me different perspectives and builds my skills and my value in the eyes of my RM and VP. I have the 2 different Affordable programs nailed down at my Communities but when I helped at another, it was a totally different one too.
amazing.. I like being busy.. I don't mind paperwork.. but I love the bringing people home, giving them a home and keeping them happy aspect of it all .. I can do the paperwork but I love being all over my property with my fingers in it all lol
For awhile, I would've taken either Regional or Marketing. I made every effort to not only excel at being a Manager but to consistently go above and beyond what was expected. I also made my ambitions known. And.. I learned. Training. Articles. Mentors. Learn how to be the very best and have your own personal role models.
I wanted the job by 30 and I got it. I went down the Marketing path. Looking back, I would've made a great regional but I would have also hated it on a personal level. I've gotten older and wiser. I like being the cheerleader and a resource. I would've disliked emergencies, tragedies, and personal employee issues the most I think.
Not sure what path is available with your current company. Easier to grow with in your company from Manager to Regional then to just apply for a regional role outside with no experience. With your current company be seen. Volunteer to train new employees and open to floating to other properties to help. Look at a multi site role as an option. Starting as manager of 2 properties then they can see you can handle that role.

The company I work with currently does not allow from growth and if you overstep your duties you get reprimanded.
I take over for other managers who take vacations, though vacation isn't available at my property. I am on call for other managers for questions... but it is just what it is ...
I am looking to a manager / multi manager positions currently to get my foot into a new company that will have room to grow if I decide to go that route..
I agree, educate yourself. Show initative to take on more. I've given this book to several throughout my career. Make yourself the obvious choice for the opportunity you want and prepare those you hire to be ready to replace you
As a manager, looking to advance to a corporate level...first and foremost, your performance must be stellar as well as the rest of your team. The more others around you are moving up, the better that looks for you. Volunteer to help train others. Become the go to person for feedback, extra help, etc. Ask for special projects, like acquisitions. LOOK THE PART. People need to be able to visualize you as a corporate employee, RPM, Trainer, whatever. The old adage of "dress for the job you want" really is true. Hair, makeup and fit of clothes is so important. Let your supervisor know that you're interested in advancement. You want to be assertive and take the initiative to put yourself out there.

Self assess. What are you good at? What do you like? What do you want to do in five years? Then try and figure out what you need to learn to get to that five year goal, and find an interim job where you use the skills you at which you excel, but also exposes you to the things you need to learn
Lots of great advice here...and I think, Rose, because you're even asking the question, you're on your way. What I would add is to make it known to you whomever will listen that you are interested in additional responsibility or a greater role. And, when an opportunity presents itself, e.g. an opening within the company, ask for it!
Get your CAM as quickly as possible. The course teaches you to be a terrific manager as well as to start thinking like an owner. Next, make sure your property and team performance is always stellar. Then, train your replacement. Never be afraid to hire or train people to be as strong or stronger than you. They will push you up the ladder. Good luck!
