Our seniors asked for a stripper pole in the weight room. They also requested to be taken to the liquor store. My point is, they are old, not dead. So do the same things you do for younger people. Do wine tastings, bourbon tastings or cocktail making classes, dance classes, etc.
back in my senior management days, I invited all the red hat chapters to compete in a regional red hat pagent with competitive categories and guest judges. The event was held at our community. This went over in a big way one of the guest judges was a tv newscaster, so we got more mileage out of that as well.
Karaoke, ice cream social, luau, harvest festival, 50’s themed bbq with classic cars and a dJ, senior prom, casino night, black and white ball. Halloween costume contest, Yappy Hour bring your doggie! Stop me when you’ve heard enough!
My seniors loved theme parties where they could dress up (Hawaiian Day for summer kick off, Black Tie Affair for NYE) I had a small budget, $300, to work with too...
We charged small amounts for each function to help cover costs. Pool parties with DJ"s. My seniors were extremely competitive. We found a company that provided trivia set ups. They formed teams of 8 and played a night every other week. We also did concert series with 4 good tribute bands over a 4 month period. They love one day bus trips to casinos, shopping, etc.. We would buy a section of seats at the theater for plays, ballets and musicals. Even spring events. They loved baseball games. So much more. It was fun.
The seniors I worked with enjoyed bingo and since licensing didnt allow us to take them anywhere we did bingo and movie days with popcorn, also local ballet groups love to perform for seniors. I was working on having hawaiiain music and buffet with hawaiian food come. However the best would be a bus trip to the casino and local casinos generally have buses that stop near senior housing as its a good match but for some reason when I worked with Jamboree we had to be careful with liability on trips but we gave certificates for buffets at bingo as prizes. Silver sneakers can come for low cost fitness too. They also just love arts and crafts and board games. They are so simple. Maybe a paint and wine class.
And for memorial and veterans day do something special for them, They lived thru it and their stories are remarkeable and they love to share their knowledge.
We also have Conversation Card coffee hours. They are a deck of cards with different questions on them. You draw one out of the box and everyone who wants to can answer it. They are great ones like favorite childhood memories, and silliest thing you did as an adult. Our tenants love them and they are cheap.
