My day today
Resident: (dead serious) there is a baby that cries
Me: (stares)
Resident: (stares back)
Me: (continue to stare)
Resident: (stares back)
Me: uhm... ok?
Resident: I don't know what apt the baby is from, but it cries a lot
Me: ????????♀️
I mean, do i issue a lease violation to this baby? It should know we have quiet hours! ????????????????????
This made my day! I needed this today. I had one tell me their neighbor walks. I said ok? She said, no, he walks, like to the bathroom, in the middle of the night. Ok? Then went on and on about how I didn’t understand and it wakes her up, blah blah. I said apartment living isn’t for everyone. She left my office and I never heard from her again!
I had this and I told the tenant....Oh I know the pour Mom the baby is teething and it got an ear infection and they put it on antibiotics and it got such a bad diaper rash the baby must be so miserable and the poor mom walks the floors trying to sooth the baby.....None of it was true but I never got another complaint from this resident...LOL....
People are hilarious, lol! I had someone complain about a 2 year old having a meltdown early in the morning. I told them that apartments are like houses, you can hear through the walls, and to get a fan or an air purifier to create some white noise for themselves. People would rather listen to it every day and complain than do one thing to fix their problem.
I have a good one.
Resident: my toilet bowl has black mildew around the rim.
Me: do you have a toilet bowl brush to scrub the toilet bowl?
Resident: NO! I don’t clean toilets. I need maintenance at my apartment immediately to clean the bowl.
Me: Really!! Let me know how that works out for you.
I have a resident at one of my communities that has gone so far as to log when the family above her is, when the kids are playing in the apartment, when the baby cries, etc. she did this for a full month and turned it in to my manager and wanted the family evicted for noise. She also called the police on more than one occasion to file a complaint.
Being a mother of three boys (two of my own and a step-son), I know the stress of crying babies. Some people do not. However, being that my two boys are 7 and 2, I have found that if I ever have someone come in and bring up a baby crying that they aren't necessarily looking for you to DO SOMETHING about it. They are just stressed about it because it is a sensitive subject.
They don't want to be insensitive, but they want to enjoy their home, too. I always suggest, have you gone up to speak to the resident to ask if there is anything that you can do to help her? Maybe her baby is crying and she is overwhelmed and doesn't have any help with things around the house. Sometimes a very small courtesy visit to the parent of the crying baby can mean a lot to them and they are more likely to do whatever THEY can to help you, too.
The parent is under enough stress, sending them a notice would only make it worse. My quote I always use is..."There is a fine line between Compassion and Fair Housing, that is where Customer Service lies".
