Is this considered a reasonable accommodation? was created by Tamara Sanchez
So many questions, one came from my significant other as I’ve been teaching him about fair housing. “Is this considered a reasonable accommodation?” Then I ask myself could someone really have a need for this? Can someone ask for such a modification/accommodation in a way that we would have to comply.

Bicycle handlebars? I mean, I cannot imagine a doctor prescribing something as non-medical as that without any medicinal known benefit.

Maybe they can't afford a medical device so they improvised.
It could be a weird sexual thing too, you just never know...

Maybe a person with no legs? I would think that could make this a reasonable accommodation.

Actually, at first I questioned the question but had to think back to that, could an individual that needs assistance getting up from bed. Now I know some older structures cannot handle the weight of a body.

Wouldn't this be a reasonable modification? A reasonable accommodation is a change to a policy or practice. Unless say the accommodation was you let them mount it to the wall where you normally do not allow things to be mounted to the wall.

Joseph Ramsey this would be a reasonable modification, just as a toilet grab bar would

Jack Metzel exactly. We're on the same page. Anything being installed would fall under a modification.

But my guess is one could say no because the item wasn’t designed for that purpose and we can request proper equipment is installed. I’m also wondering if a licensed contractor would do that for anyone. That looks totally DIY.

Unless you have additional backing in that wall, it's not safe to mount something like this. It then becomes an unreasonable accommodation request because the cost goes too high to tear out the sheetrock and add additional blocking to the wall.

Beyond the injuries that could occur if that wall comes crashing down because it can’t support their body weight.

Keep in mind that to grant this reasonable modification, the resident must have it installed by a licensed contractor and one that management approves.

That’s not a reasonable modification, it’s an irrational modification... Some sort of kinky crap going on there... What’s the said disability? “I dream about riding my Harley while laying in bed...?”

Ahhh, here’s an idea. There’s a form that management sends to the residents doctor for the doctor to fill out. This form requests the documentation be provided to support the need for any such reasonable accommodation to the resident with their disability.
If not received, no accommodation should be made.
Always remember, you do for one, you must do for all.

It's still in my mind, I mean really, I wonder what the purpose of this contraption is? It looks too far up from the pillows to assist someone in getting up.

That’s what I was thinking. It’s way too high to assist someone getting out of bed. I think it’s someone’s idea of decorating.

I am glad you were able to giggle as much as I have been. I love the comments so much, as well. Let’s just say it’s refreshing to be professional in our answers while laughing a little. Sometimes it’s all about that, what seems unreasonable/reasonable to some may be reasonable/unreasonable to others.
