How many of you property managers are micro managed? and too what extent? I am so tired of being told you are in charge, make it happen, then have upper management tell me we need to watch our spending , we are going to decide what units you are going to get ready.! They are not even in the same state! I am beyond frustrated. not to mention all the free time "comp" time we are expected to work. 3 hrs on Saturdays, an extra hr on Halloween, extra hrs for functions! how do your companies handle extra time?

Kat Porter I am as are some of my managers. In these cases, if they work additional hours then they know they can use this time off as they need and will still be paid their full salary. I as an Rpm take note of these additional hours to ensure fair treatment of my team members.
My supervisor treats me in the exact same manner.
Dena Scott Hendry I understand the grass is not always greener. I've been doing this for 17 years. My problem is I worked for a great company for years with an amazing regional so I know they are out there! I guess just not very many!

Gina Shingleton Wakefield honey that is so illegal on so many levels no matter what state you live in. You can’t work off the clock. What happens if someone gets hurt at work off the clock? Where do you work? I’ll turn them into the labor board just kidding, but you need to stop working off the clock and you need to not have your staff work off the clock. You will be the first one blamed if they turn your employer in.
My RM doesn't micromanage at all. She trusts me to do my job and is always there if I need help. I'm moving states next year and some of your comments make me scared to leave.
We got paid for all our time. It sucked having to do events that were scheduled outside regular hours, but we ALWAYS got paid. Sometimes we’d flex out schedules to reduce overtime, but we always got paid for every hour worked.

In California we rarely have salary on-site employees anymore because of the extensive hours that are worked. Our company only has salary employees at the corporate level.

I agree to get in contact with a lawyer. They may be trying to avoid paying taxes by not paying their employees on weekends on top of the other reasons it’s illegal and wrong.
I reminded my Regional Manager that I’d be off this Friday for a wedding and he told me that I needed to get permission from the owner before any days off will be approved. Whaaaaaaaa?!?!
I feel your pain. I work for a man who just took away my right to by anything for residents or office. He says I spend to much. My boss added up what I spent. I have spent 1400 for 5 months worth of parties, move in gifts, office snacks. I think that is so cheap. That is less than 300 a month. We are Luxury. I'm so pissed. He know has his wife shop for me
Hours worked should be paid. Period. There is zero leeway for “comp time”. That is not how the Labor Law works. You work, you are on the clock and you get paid. You work more than 40 hours in a seven day period, you get paid time and a half. If someone asks you to work “comp time” you need to run. Fast. And far. That is a law suit in the making. And it’s not fair to you.
Let me be clear - this is for hourly employees. No one below a Community Manager should be salary. And many managers are not eligible for salaries status.
We are old school around here! we do have computers though! no on line applications, no social media, do not email residents! Plus I will never use the amount of comp time I have. We had an office fire my 1st day here. tons and tons of hours put in!

I don't mind the comp time as much as being micro managed! I just do not understand the need to have that much control over another persons Job. Why did you hire me if you are going to do it! very frustrating!!

I’ve worked for a few companies and they all do things differently, some micro manage more than others when it comes to the day to day operations. I’ve learned in the last 12 years that when you sign up for this job you sign up to work extra hours, sometimes weekends, sometimes holidays, etc. it’s very demanding and as a manager I’m available to whoever needs me 24/7. Thankfully I’m not needed often and I have a very smoothly ran property but I have in the past been in situations where I was needed a lot. It comes with the job in my opinion, when I work extra I try and leave early on a Friday or come in late on a Tuesday. I make sure it all equals out for me and my company is ok with that.
