I have been in the industry over 20 years and have not heard of this but that is great! I remember when it was ok to shut off water and electricity! Best days lol

I used to on one property I manage put boxes outside the doors of those people who did not pay rent. Lol ????

In saint louis MO we would change the locks. Looking back it seems crazy.

People would get shot in todays world!!! I remember soing liens and lockouts!!! Both were highly effective....but again, that would get people shot in todays world!!!

YES! Taking the front doors off sure got people’s attention! It was great !

My first manager would lien the couch cushions and the tv remote. ????

Donna Schmidt I remember those days! We had a down unit FULL of TV’s, VCR’s, Nintendo’s... Crazy to think of the things we were able to do back then! Also, my managers smoked in their offices! Wth? ???? #1989

So i left a place because they did that and this was within the last few years. I was not going to be a part of that!

No quite but 5 years ago we could go and hold residents valuables ransom ???? until the rent was paid in TX. It might have changed tho

Yep. And they still wouldn't move. Back in the Landlord Lien days. We would also remove their toilet seats.

Just take the light bulbs and the ceiling fan blades! Lol!

Not in Florida & Georgia, but u used to be able to lock the door in Texas. Not as up to date on the different states as I used to be

Illinois in the 80's-We use to turn the heat on in the summer and take front doors off-rent was paid quickly atter that, that was early in my career and I was not the one making the call. I also remember having convicts from county jail come out/put belongings in bed sheets. knot them and throw them out windows and it did not matter if you lived on the 15th floor or the 1st (that was county regulations at the time).

In Texas, in the 80’s we could go into their apts and do liens. Where we took their stereos or TVs until they paid. If we included electricity in the rent, we turned it off too.

I have done plenty of evictions during my tenure, never removed front doors. When was this legal?

I remember hearing about this years ago when it was already illegal. Some landlords/property managers would tell stories about the quote "good old days. At the time it was done, I think the landlords also shut off the utilities if they building included them. I think some landlords did this up until the mid to late 1960's.

Not sure if it was ever legal but some landlords did it up until the mid to late 1960's. I never worked for anyone who did it but there were certainly stories told about those who had.
