Every once in a while, I think about the fact that I've been leasing for seven years and have never actively pursued management and moving up, then something like this happens and I know I'm doing exactly what I'm supposed to be doing!
Today, for the first time in my seven years of leasing apartments, I had one of my approved applicants bring me flowers at work. I almost started crying…
One of the MOST important things you can do as a leasing agent is determine in the first 90-120 seconds WHY someone is looking for a new apartment. It sets the mood for the whole tour and you have to be very sensitive to why. It runs the whole gamut…new couples excited about their first apartment together, job transfers into the area, death of a spouse and selling a house, break-ups, and in this gal’s case, leaving an abusive marriage with a three-year-old in tow.
I was able to call her today and give her the good news that she qualified on her own salary for an apartment, and over the phone I could hear the audible relief in her voice. All she kept saying over and over is, “Really? Really?”
She then showed up this afternoon after she got off work with flowers for me. We stepped outside and talked for a few minutes, and I relayed a little bit of the abuse I suffered at the hands of my son’s dad, and we hugged for a long minute.
I normally don’t make friends with residents, but I think in this case I’m going to make an exception…
