Jon,
Great topic. We have hand sanitizer at every desk. I take the "T" (subway) into work everyday and make sure to wash my hands as soon as I get in the office. If an employee is feeling under the weather we allow them her/him to work remotely, which works out well.
I was recently marked down on a shop because I didn't shake hands. So now I shake everyone hands, but I keep a big bottle of hand sanitizer in the office and I give a small one to everyone on my staff so we can help stop the spread of any illness going around.
Rose...gotta love those shoppers...sigh...I do not shake hands. and I'm not sure how that would go over within my company, but I know too many people with the H1N1 flu and I don't want it!
We have hand sanitizers all over the place and I've handed out information to all my residents on how to wash their hands and other ways to prevent passing along the flu, etc...I've also posted these tips in my laundry room and at my office...
Thanks for posting this one! We all have to be aware of the great danger that these diseases (such as H1N1) may cause. In our office, we disinfect the entire room at least twice a month. Our maintenance team cleans it everyday and the management provides alcohol for all the employees.
Thanks Joy for your comments and congratulations on your first post!
Here is another thought I remembered yesterday but forgot to throw into this conversation. What are we doing with items such as
1. Keyboards
2. Mouse
3. Phones
4. Light switches
5. Copy machines
We keep wipes near all of our office machines, so everyone can wipe off the start buttons, etc before using them...and we spray lysol on all light switches and door knobs, etc. a few times a day...
I'll never forget many years ago a leasing seminar I was attending and the topic of handshaking came up. I can't for the life of me remember who the speaker was, but it was a nationally known industry professional and I was thrilled when I heard her say she didn't shake hands in the winter time. I'm not a handshaker either, so I was thrilled to hear someone else have the same thoughts. She said that she politely let the person know that she didn't shake hands during cold and flu season. Most people respected her honesty and it was also a good ice breaker as she would sometimes throw some humor into it. I have always remembered that and followed suit and I've never had any awkard moments or been knocked on a shop because of it.
For sure! My Fist pump/business "you can do it" cheerleading pose!
Regarding your comment though, I am not sure I could hold back from shaking someone's hand or giving the half hug. It goes against my grain. However, I do carry around a travel bottle of hand sanitizer and at the appropriate moment a little cleansing takes place.
