There are plenty of cis women who struggle with this. There is a PM at another property who has long nails that have like rhinestones and stuff on them. I mean for her property it’s fine but it wouldn’t fly at some of our higher end upscale properties.
I think it depends on the area. Atlanta is very urban and predominantly African American… our luxury properties have rules against nails but it’s not inforced. Plenty of ppl with bedazzled nails and 3700 3BR rentals
To be completely frank, I don’t care. As long as it looks good and is maintained and they maintain the rest of a normal dress code and they are high performers, then their nails being painted or acrylic is the least of my worries. I know that some may disagree with me, but as an industry we can’t continue to enforce dress code/ attire/ policies and procedures that were in put in place 10+ years ago and expect to attract and retain high performers.
too true. And even 20+ years ago! Tattoos, subtle piercings, colored hair, nails are just today’s fashion statements. As long as they don’t have offensive language it is a part of today’s mainstream society. Seen lots of changes in 38 years. Heck, used to smoke at my desk!
I appreciate that you posted this question. We are in the process of making sure our company’s career apparel guidelines are gender neutral, including nails. Seeing all these replies reinforces the need for such a thing.
OMG, would much rather see cute painted nails on men than those outlandish LONG, gross pointed nails that some women wear. The cashier can't even pick up change due to them!
What is your policy for painted nails in the work place for females? That should be followed across the board for all employees. It’s not our job to judge, it’s our jobs to offer fair employment.
I am old and don't really care as long as people are clean and don't smell. If their personal appearance affects their work in some way then it's not going to work out and will show in their ability to do their job or not. If the job performance suffers then they can move on. In my many years of experience it seems that our ability to connect with our clients and our integrity are the most important components
The same as I feel about men with long hair. I don't care. All I care about is the person being a solid fit for our culture, providing the highest quality service for our residents, working well with their peers and possessing high ethics and morals. FYI - emo boys and heavy metal guys were painting their nails loooooonnngg before cis gender guys.
These days it doesnt matter what we think. Like it or hate it, its a slippery slope to have an opinion. If its not somehow vulgar, then let it be. Personally, its so hard to find good team members that as long as they show up to work, work hard and do what the company asks, Im good!!
Hey I applaud you asking this question. And I am so in awe of this incredible group and their answers.
Should we ask about non-conforming gender expression across the board now?
