Health insurance through employers is a bit of a mess. All the rules around it were crafted by lobbyists for the insurance companies. The biggest thing is you have to offer a flat option the same for everyone. In reality letting employees choose how much of their compensation package they want to spend on insurance is the win for the employee. So instead of that employers now need to find that middle ground. Do they cover the whole families which for someone is a $20k/value while someone else it has a $0/year value. So while everyone is treated the “same” the end results are wildly inequitable. We bring it up at our company various times, because it is just money at the end of the day and it is all their money.
Makes sense. Really at the end of the day very few people would actually choose company paid health insurance if they were given the option to take the premiums in cash and solve things on their own.
