in my experience, people who have come up through the ranks make better leaders in our industry because they have a much better understanding of what their team goes through. Feedback is a 2 way street. yes, i am going to discuss things i have a problem with, but I also I want my team's constructive feedback and suggestions to improve.....as long as they didn't start yesterday and are trying to take over today.

Janie Nash Burnett, I may be old school in my way of thinking, but I too think it’s important to start at the bottom so that you can know each position and have respect for what each position goes through. When I hear someone has walked into the position of PM or even Regional and they don’t know basic acronyms, CAM, ARM, NALP. In the past, my leasing consultants didn’t know what a sparkle bucket was or that before 2000, Apartment Guide, For Rent and Apt Finder were printed.

Agreed! As leaders we need to foster an environment of open communication. Employees need to feel comfortable speaking up. We can open the lines of communication by asking questions such as; are there additional trainings you would like, what can I do to make your job easier and are there any other items you would like to talk about.

That's the difference between a real leader and a figurehead. Real leaders understand that it is their job to say when something is wrong or unethical. No matter the cost - and there usually is one. In my life, I've never regretted speaking up, only staying silent.
