I have a resident who is at the end of their rope and I’m really worried about him. He’s on the verge of eviction, car repossession, utilities being cut off, and he’s eating PB&J sandwiches…are there any programs or any charities that can help with things like this? He’s in a commission based job and the economy has tanked his sales. Any suggestions for help in VA? Thanks!
Amanda Buyalos ok. I have contacts all over. A friend who ran a section 8 property in Roanoke said TAP- Total Action Against Poverty is very helpful when residents are in this spot. She’s going to see if she can get more contacts but hopefully that gets him started.
Amanda Buyalos I am in Virginia. Salvation Army. They have assisted 3 of my residents post RRP. Catholic Charities will help with utilities. THRIVE. Thrive has intake workers in several parts of the state. If by chance he is former Military, there are programs that will help get back on track.
Have you looked into enrolling your community with Esusu? We offer 0% interest housing stability loans to residents struggling to pay rent, paid directly to owners/operators to keep cash flow healthy.
Lauren Lombardo yes! All over the US. I do partnerships for Esusu. Our goal is to bridge the racial wealth gap. We want to help renters while also helping Owners/Operators decrease eviction rates and costs. It’s a win win!
I don’t know what community resources you have but try churches. We have churches that will help with rent and food. Also, if you have a Salvation Army they may have rent money and food.
Thank you for this kind conversation. I am in Texas so can’t point to resources for him. But perhaps we could help him find a job that isn’t solely commissioned? Bless you both.
Amanda Buyalos there are many sales jobs that pay a base salary so he could continue that path. I hope he gets back on his feet soon. Best wishes to him.
He needs a new job. Point him towards a work force center with career counseling. Perhaps give him a list of local food pantries and emergency resources (call local social services office for this list)
I don't know specifically in Roanoke, but in Northern VA, several churches are able to help. They'll help keep them in housing and with finding employment, etc. I had several different churches help some of my residents.
I have no input on the situation or access to resources in your area, but thank you for being a kind human. This is why you’re in your position. We need more individuals like you working in property management. Your heart doesn’t go unnoticed, please keep being you.
He should also get with a job recruiter that can find him something with a base + commission. Many companies are going to a base plus or draw because they know people have bills to pay while ramping up sales.
Have you gone on the “Free” Facebook groups in Roanoke? There are so many helpful people in these groups who will help him. It’s awesome of you to help him.
