It's intern season! A few tips on how to survive and thrive this summer.

Congratulations to you for embarking on this journey as an intern in the best industry on the planet!! Here are a few tips that will help rocket your Property Management summer towards great successes!!

Please do your homework. Hopefully you have already researched the company while preparing for this internship. You may not have had the time for an extensive study, but at least be familiar and have a general understanding with the basics like the history, culture, mission statement and core values.

Dress for success. Dressing professionally not only makes a great statement, it shows that you're taking this internship seriously. The way you dress will impact not only the way others see you, but also your own self image. In an industry where first impressions are key, consciously be aware of the image you would like to project.

Be aware of your time management. As an intern, you may find yourself thrust into an environment you are not quite familiar with. It's important for you to be organized, be mindful to not take on too much and overload yourself, and to let someone know if you get bogged down. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Remember, your team is there to help you succeed.

Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions and lot’s of them. This shows that you're willing to learn and have a genuine interest in the job and the company.

Be flexible. People have different thinking, working and communication styles. Learning to be adaptable will help you expand your opportunities considerably.

Connect with your team. Take every opportunity to build as many quality relationships with your team as possible. The more they know you and what you can do, the more support you will have during your internship. This will help you going forward as well because hey, you never know when you may need a stellar reference letter.

Find a coach/ mentor. Ask a supervisor or someone you in the company to set some scheduled time aside (great time for a Starbucks break) learn about their experience with company and ask for any words of wisdom or sage advice.

Jump in. Your manager as well as your team will be impressed if you're eager and willing to jump in and help out. Check in with your managers and team to be sure what you're doing each day is in line with the priorities of the community.

Ask for feedback. It's so important to ask for feedback regularly. This shows that you're taking initiative, clearly committed, and  genuinely care not only about your own success but the success of the Team as well.

So good luck, big hugs, and I hope you have an awesome intern experience this summer. Welcome to the magnificent, fun, crazy and exciting world of Property Management. I will be on the lookout for a flood of  “ How I spent my summer as an intern” emails peppering my inbox in September!
