Empty R22 Containers?

A discussion just started in our office about empty R22 containers. We have collected a massive amount and are trying to determine the best option for disposal. What are you doing with your empty containers?

According to the EPA, the tanks that have been emptied of original refrigerant must have any remaining refrigerant recovered (there will always be a little left in the jug). Once this is completed, the container must be rendered useless. This explains the "knock-out" that is on the side of the jug.

Once the jug is no longer able to hold anything, it can be disposed of. (The EPA recommends recycling.)

From a procedural standpoint, keep records for each jug to prove its correct disposal. If recovery is properly done in to a recovery tank, that recovered refrigerant can be used.

Excellent. The problem in our area (Columbus, OH) is that we have yet to find a facility that will accept them for recycling, even with the knock out..

Wow, I just noticed this was a long time ago, when you posted this. Oh well, I still would like to know if you have found a solution to your problem?
