In the admin area of your fan page, you will find an option to "Send an Update" to your fans. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, Facebook changed their system quite a while back so that updates are no longer easily apparent to your fans. Instead, they are tucked away quietly in an "Other" section of their inbox. So this begs the question, should you even bother using the feature anymore? Well, we did a test to find out how effective they would be!
We sent out an update letting our fans know about our test, and to count those who actually saw the update, we asked them to "Like" a
specific status update we set up
.
At the date of sending, we had ~2,940 fans. Of those, only 11 people responded.
Now these results are very unscientific, as plenty of factors could muddy our results, such as people who didn't take the time to indicate they had seen the message, or those that clicked "Like" from the news feed, but had never seen the actual update message.
Either way, the results were less than encouraging, at 0.3%. Yikes! This means if you have a hundred fans, there is a good chance that not one of them will see your update. So my suggestion is to not worry about them anymore unless Facebook offers a different way for them to be distributed!
SIDE NOTE: Over the last couple of months, we have changed the way we use our Fan Page! Rather than an overwhelming amount of links, it's actually turned into a great place to discuss and enjoy. If you are not a fan, I hope you check it out. And if you have previously blocked us because of the swarm of posts, I hope you try us out again!
