Coyotes? was created by Michele O'Day
I have never had this problem on a property...anyone know how to get rid of Coyotes? Animal Control and Dept. of Fish and wildlife will not assist.

A sniper with a rifle??? ;)

Call your local zoo or if you have a college that has a zoology program nearby and see if they have any advice or can refer you to someone who can.

I know residents of a neighborhood out west called their sheriff's office for assistance on this issue. I also know that we have called the local police department and received assistance from the officers there. They came out and shot the animal. Problem solved. I suppose if that doesn't work, there is probably some method of using another animal's scent (you buy it at a hunting store) to use on the perimeter of the property which will repel the coyotes.

I do not know where you are, but are there any groups of hunting enthusiasts in your area that can help?

Now I do not have a lot of information about where you are at, so I am going to hit you with a shotgun blast of information. Some will cost a little money and some not so much.

Now cost wise and I am sure no one wants to go through the expense, but you can put a fence around your property at about 5' tall and the top portion have it leaning out. You want to go with it about 12" under ground because coyotes will dig.

Then you can use sensor light as they are real jumpy with those as well as a sprinkler system.

You can also get some wolf or coyote urine powder. This is what I think Mindy was eluding to. You can also order it from site: nightpests.com/coyote.htm On this site you will see other things that you can use as well.

Now there are also what I call good housekeeping rules and that is do not have garbage they can get into, police up any trash, fruits, and so on.

People that stay on the property if they have pets make sure they are spay and neutered. The sents will attract coyotes.

Now me I find the powder and the sensor lights as the most cost affective and they work great. Be sure to watch out for your small pets as they will for sure eat small cats and dogs. If you allow them out at night, then go with them and have a flashlight and something to make noise with. Coyotes are smart hunters. They are also brave by numbers. In other words the more of them there are the braver they are when traveling in packs.

Hope some of this helps and if you need more information let me know.

I had a similar problem once with racoons...lots of racoons..climbing up the siding.

Coyotes lived in packs near my childhood home; they generally never came to the house perimeter unless the land was heavy in snow and then because they were hungry. They really do not like humans, so its strange they would migrate to your community.

Remove the food source and they will go on down the road.

Also I want to add that before moving here to Texas in 2006 I could not tell you that much about coyotes. But where I stay in the hill country we have had a couple now and then, so I made it my business to get a little educated on them. Now I am far from being an expert and spent most of my childhood in nothern states hunting deer, rabbits, racoons and the like. Then in the military since I was in units that would get one in exotic location with some animals and creatures where they would put you on their food chain if there was no other easy prey around.

If I had more information about what type of area you were in and what state I might be able to give you some more information what would maybe help. Since I am thinking that hunting them may not be on your list :) Johnny and Herb may be the only ones that would chuckle at that one since I threw a little humor in there for the soldier heart!

Any other ideas than kill, kill, kill?

That might be my answer to boorish people with one track minds, but realistically, not the best answer.
