I was recently asked in an interview what was the amount of my average operating budget that I’m currently managing. I was completely confused. Is this the total of your budget’s revenue, NOI, or what?
Yes, that would be a combination of all that you mentioned. Total Revenue, Total Operating Expense, Net Operating Income. Are you over or above. Are your expenses staying within your revenue and what is the NET income in the end.
They asked you a poorly phrased question! That question is usually posed as "what is the annual operating budget you are currently managing?"
To technically answer the question one would reply with the total income and total expenses for the year, but most people will simply reply with the total income (gross revenue). The interviewer is just trying to understand what sort of numbers you have experience dealing with, and thus the size of the operation that would accompany such numbers.
