Previously when members logged in, they would be directed to their own profile, but frankly, we didn't think there was much value in that. So we are trying something new and having people redirected to the Discussions area. Most of our members know about all the great blogs on the site, but many haven't seen all the potential our discussions area has to talk about different issues and get questions answered. So let's see how this works out!
Thanks for the feedback, Don. I think we'll try it through tomorrow (or just tomorrow morning) since that is when the newsletter goes out, which will give a lot of views. It might be worth it to have this temporarily to increase awareness of the Discussions area and then switch it to the front page afterward.
On second thought, we are going to hold off one week to do a bigger test. I think I'm going to prepare a "how to guide" for the discussion area and brainstorm some other ways to explain it a little better. I really think the Discussions area can be the most powerful component because members can get custom answers to their unique questions. So we'll have to think on that. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I am with Don on this one - I like the homepage view. Is it possible to intermingle blog posts and discussions on the homepage? That might help you achieve the desired result.
Great stuff Brent - sorry I have been absent for awhile. M
When I log in, I want to stay on the same page I originally landed on.
If I come to the homepage directly, then I should stay on the homepage after I log in. However, if I enter the site on a specific blog post, discussion topic, etc. -- usually from a link posted on a social networking site -- I should stay on that page. I think redirects take away from the user experience ... just one man's opinion.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. We actually decided to go with the option of keeping the user on the same page, although there are a few technical hiccups in one area.
