Everybody wants to rank highly for their own name in Google, but having the last name of Williams makes it very difficult! But this also makes the perfect opportunity to test the effect of Google's +1 button on organic search. Will a lot of +1's boost a page up the ranks? Let's find out!
If you want to help with the experiment, and see if I can win the "Brent Williams" war, just go to my profile and click the +1 button! I'll report the results at the end!
Well, I think it's fair to say that the results are in, and it's not good news. I really thought it would hit the top 40, and maybe it did rise in the rankings, but unfortunately it wasn't a huge win as of yet.
We had 8 +1's during the experiment, and it's possible that is not enough to move the needle. But when searching for "Brent Williams", we did not crack the top 40 search results, which was the goal.
Thanks everybody for trying, and if you are just joining the experiment, feel free to participate and we'll test the results after some more +1's!
That's a good question, Elizabeth, and I honestly have no idea. It hasn't been anything big enough to report about, for sure. To be honest with you, I'm not even sure where those analytics are now. I just looked at Webmaster tools and can't find them, although I might have just missed them...
Yeah Google + is a strange one. I feel like I've been able to wrap my brain around other social networks fairly easily but something about the way G+ works just frustrates me and I can't quite put my finger on it.
I'm always interested in how others are using it but I have yet to meet someone who's really passionate about that network - at least not the way people are with FB, Twitter, #in, etc.
