I'm curious to know who is still doing pre-employment drug screening, and are you including cannabis in the panel? What are the main reasons to support your decision?
We don't drug screen because we are a small crew who has had mostly close referrals for team members. However, I think globally that screening for cannabis is just not necessary. I think the days are gone where it is seen as any sort of hard drug, and if we are not policing alcohol use after hours, which is probably more destructive, then I don't think we should for cannabis. Besides, the labor market is tough enough as it is, no reason to throw another hurdle. (And just to be clear, any drug use during work hours is a fireable offense - we are just talking about testing for something that could be done on off hours)
My husband works in safety and he prefers marijuana use over alcohol use as a recreational drug for employees for a number of reasons. Considering it's legal in many states, it's a slippery slope too. But totally agree with Brent that no one should be using it at work. I would think that it's better to do a cognition test than a drug test but I'd love to hear others' opinions!
Don't screen for pot. You eliminate so much of your workforce! It's legal to use in many states and can be used off hours and not affect on-site performance.
Our "Drug Free Workplace" designation in our Work Comp policy requires us to. Positive results are okay with a medical prescription. It has made hiring, especially in states with legal recreational use, very difficult.
The company that I work for does Drug Screening. I failed the first test because I use CBD!! Second test came back with a pass. Marijuana is legal in sooo many states and hopefully will be legal in more. In my 30 some years in the business, I would rather work with someone who smokes marijuana over someone who uses alcohol . However neither should be used at work!
