Hello, waiting to hear back from our legal team, but are you able to charge service/assistance animals the hard, true cost of the Poo Prints DNA swab fee? State of Iowa.
Thanks!

No. They can be fined but not incur costs

Regardless ,I’d say it’s running a risk to charge. I’d require the DNA swab as you do for all animals living on property , but waive the cost associated. Charge violation fee if found to be violating. Of course, best to get that attorney guidance!

In Florida yes you are allowed to. You cannot charge the pet fee or the pet rent but the DNA analysis yes. I believe it was $75 at our property.

Not in most states, you’ll want to check with your company’s legal team for up to date laws in your area

We don’t charge for the swab but they get charged if we find their DNA.

As a non-practicing non-attorney who dispenses non-legal advice, and given that fair housing compliance has become more about risk management than equal opportunity, if it were my property, I would require all animals that are taken outside of the apartment home on a regular basis to give a DNA sample and I would pass along the actual wholesale cost of the test to the resident. Having said that, it's up to you to determine your risk tolerance and whether you want to chance becoming a "test case" if a complaint is filed. YMMV.

I would not charge fee for swab but fine if violate as long as you have addendum signed.

Most likely your legal will say that as part of the Reasonable Accommodation process and a third party verification of need (unless obvious and or necessary), the fee would be waived since the dog is not a pet, the cost of the DNA be waived. As a service animal it would not be a pet and not subject to fees.
