Do I have any peers on here that have opened a small convenience store on property? One of the ideas we've been kicking around.…

Erik McKinster Drina Moon I had a feeling we were being a little cutting edge but no one? This actually came up as an idea to get a better police presence on property… you know, “swing by and get a water/coffee/coke on me” kind of thing.

Guest Insider I had one at my previous property for about 6 or so months. It’s a fantastic idea in theory, and I feel like it would have worked if there had been a better system in place. The items were on the shelves, bins, and the fridge/freezers, and there was a kiosk to pay with a card. However, you could just grab the items and go without paying for them since they weren’t locked or anything. Yes, we had cameras, but we didn’t have the time to check the cameras constantly when the inventory didn’t match the sales. If it had been to where they had to pay prior to grabbing the item (more like a vending machine type system) I believe it would’ve worked much better.

Guest Insider Abby Jennings it sucked. I hated that dang thing. Awesome idea in theory but in actuality it was awful

Erik McKinster Abby Jennings we would have it manned… with the room I have in mind I would change the door to a Dutch door, the resident could walk up, see everything available, and the attendant could grab it and ring it up.

Guest Insider There’s a company that does this called stockwell. I haven’t worked with that personally but as Abby said above (same property), we ended up having to close the one we had on that site because of loss. It wasn’t worth it. If you can figure out a way to make them pay first, the residents would like it and you wouldn’t have to worry about losing inventory.

Gerry Hunt We had one at a Senior property. Resident volunteered to man the store. There was everything from laundry soap to candy bars. The residents donated a lot of stuff, including homemade cookie. It was in operation certain times and days. It worked well.
