Guest InsiderWhen I think this way… I think about how every job is going to have this problem unless you get one without dealing with the public. Stay strong, there are good days and good people out there
Guest InsiderThis is what employers don’t understand 99 percent of employees are miserable and tired of rude behaviors, being under valued, under appreciated, no flexibility WE have to change our mindsets to live in our purpose and do what we should be doing that makes US happy not just working for others to pay our bills. I’m there with you! Change starts with US as ppl
Guest InsiderFeeling appreciated or paid more won't make residents less rude.Taking it personally or disconnecting is a choice.
Marge BickelI agree! I’ll come home and vent to my husband for five minutes – not using any names, of course – and then it’s usually out of my system. I will recharge, and then get ready for the next day. I’ve stayed in leasing because I love being able to provide direct customer service to my residents and help make their day a little better, and even after seven years, will probably never go into management.
Joe CornAnd that is the most abused word in this industry, “Rude”
Jessica hollingsworthI loved property management until I didn't snymore..best decision I made was getting out of it ...way less stress in my current job
Emory JOLLYIt takes mindfulness but don’t let the rude, gross people steal your joy. Find the nice residents during the day and speak with them. Spend time having fun w your team. It IS possible to have fun and work. Do that.
Paul MullikinIt is hard but you have to not take anything personal.
Guest InsiderIt’s definitely different. Since the pandemic something changed and it’s not the same anymore. People have less tolerance for any small inconvenience and they fall to name calling and insults within seconds. It’s hard to manage but I try to remind myself that every job has issues. Different than what I deal with. Always happy to talk personally if you need an ear or a friend!
Mary GarciaI know the feeling been there and for most part I just continue being myself
Guest InsiderGo in, get the job done and go home, no hard feelings. Don’t bring the work problems home.
Guest InsiderI got out of the industry after 25 years... Everything & Everyone were so different! Residents became just "Numbers" on Financials, no care anymore from higher ups if they were long term residents, senior citizens, a single mom that lost her job... Things that were taken into consideration back in the day. And Residents, don't even get me started on residents... They behaved so entitled & so disrespectful. Best Wishes to you! Always take care of yourself first.
Guest Insider I left after 20 years. Things had changed so much. I had a guy jump across my desk and try to strangle me over an noise complaint complaint.
Guest InsiderJane Wilber-Shoemaker that is just horrible! I did stay in the industry, it's hard not to with so much experience. I just went to the Vendor Side. I absolutely love it!
Guest InsiderHope you have much success on the vendor side. Dealing with much better customers.
Guest InsiderFlood people with nice. Even if the news isn't great. How they react is on them. This goes way beyond work.
Guest InsiderFrankly, and sadly, as with many service industry jobs, companies need to get more assertive and push back against abusive clients. Employees shouldn't be abused and their should be policies in place that back up the employee. Too many follow the "customer is Always right" when they're not.
Guest InsiderI had someone slam a dead rat on my desk that was in a ziplock bag, pull a knife on me when I was a young 23 year old Community Manager, key my car for evicting them and I still found the joy in doing this. As rents grow higher and higher, renters will demand more. Try to not take it personally (hard, I know) and focus on the fact that you’re providing the most important and special product on the market. The home. Stay strong and ensure you have a Regional and home office that supports and uplifts you. Without that, it’s impossible to feel motivated everyday. You got this
Guest InsiderAnd gives good workers anxiety and a lot of other issues that people did not sign upFor
Janice QuillI made the decision a week ago to retire after next month. I am staying for a month or two to help transition, but I am through after many years in property management.
Guest InsiderCant save the world but can help those that want saving. I remind myself that the bell curve is real.
Guest InsiderMaybe it’s time to move on. After 8 years doing apartments I work for an HOA and will not go back to the apartment industry.
Guest InsiderIt’s definitely changed A LOT and people overall have gotten mean after COVID restrictions.
Guest InsiderThis is a very true statement. I’ve been in it for almost 13 years, 2 as property manager. And I start to get anxiety thinking about coming to work anymore. It stressful- the people have become hard to deal with
Penny KingI feel this! I've actually had people tell me to not let this job change who I am. Yesterday was awful. So, today....I'm taking back control. And since today is National Winnie the Pooh Day, I'll leave you with this quote: ~You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think!
Guest InsiderI finally had to take a break from it all. I agree there has been a change in people.
Guest InsiderWe can only be in control of ourselves we can’t control others so taking time out and walking away to protect your emotional and mental health is 1st priority! I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, keep shining!
Guest InsiderWe suggest conflict resolution classes regularly, it helps you deal with your own feelings as well on how customers speak to you and treat you.
Guest InsiderStop using all your time and skills to make others rich STOP. btheowner
Julie Brin ThetfordIf you don’t love I would start thinking about what would make you happy - the environment, the role, the compensation, the location, etc. and whether you want to be on-site or in outside sales there’s a world out there full of choices. And life’s too short to not love where you work and the people you work with! LinkedIn Jobs is a great place to begin when looking for a new role or career choice. Maybe remote role would be better for you! make a change and change your life!
Guest InsiderI left multi family due to the changing world we live in. I use to love being a community manager. I am now in Senior Living and love it. Very rewarding
Guest InsiderPeople are tough at best, unreasonable otherwise...
Cayenne McPayneAwe I am so sorry girl. It might not help, but I asked a PM on the podcast what she does to get to the other side of a bad day and it was comforting. If you wanna you can hear it here - go.lethub.co/MFI-PMM-S1E1. I didn't include this in the record but she was dealing with just awful residents, and her bosses were pushing her hard. I am in the same place right now and it helped to hear her.
